If you’re looking for a compact alternative to the higher priced ‘multi-stack’ systems, the Best Fitness BFMG20 Sportsmans Gym, with its low frame height could be an excellent alternative.
In this review we take a look at how to get the most out of the various workout stations, with some suggestions for upper and lower body exercises.
Chest press and high cable pulley
As one of the more compact gym systems in the Body Solid range, the Best Fitness BFMG20 Sportsmans Gym still manages to provide a range of essential workout stations.
Instead of using fixed handles, the main chest press arm features a pivoting handle design that automatically adjusts to your natural plane of motion.
This helps to reduce unnecessary stress on your wrists, as well as placing more of a focus on the area of your chest you are trying to develop.
You also have the dual function press arm / pec fly which allows you to switch between the two exercises quickly.
Together with the pressing arm, one of the main features of the Best Fitness BFMG20 is the lat pulldown / high cable pulley.
If you decide to attach the wide grip lat bar, you can choose from a variety of pulldown movements to develop the muscles in your back and biceps.
Switch to the smaller straight bar, and you can perform a number of different tricep pushdowns and pulldowns.

Leg developer and low cable pulley
Although you don’t have the same adjustable back and seat settings as you get with the slightly higher priced P1X, the extra lumbar support of the back rest ensures you are as comfortable as possible when performing the leg extensions.
Despite the leg developer moving unilaterally (both sides moving at the same time), there’s still plenty of room to perform iso-lateral extensions.
This is where instead of performing the exercise with both legs at the same time, you complete your target rep range with one leg, then switch to the other.
At 150 lb, the weight stack for the Best Fitness BFMG20 does provide a slight increase over the earlier BFMG20, but you still don’t have any handles to hold onto during leg extensions.
This would have been a nice addition, but unfortunately they don’t become a standard feature on Body Solid gym systems unless you choose one of their multi-stack designs.
There’s also enough space to perform standing hamstring curls, which will again need to be performed one leg at a time.
As well as providing resistance to the leg developer, the low cable pulley can also be used for a wide range of exercises for your biceps, traps, shoulders, and legs.
